Wide feet and a high instep are different fit issues
Pressure at the sides of the forefoot is different from pressure above the instep. Tell staff where the shoe feels tight. The same EU size can feel different across shoe lasts.
Oxford or Derby shoes for wide feet?
Derby shoes have open lacing that allows adjustment around the instep. Oxfords have closed lacing for a neat silhouette. Lacing does not establish a wide-fit specification: try each style.
Should you buy a larger size?
Not automatically. Extra length may not resolve pressure and may create heel slip. Compare another last and provide the length of both feet, your usual brand and size.
Four fitting checks
- Try both shoes with your usual socks.
- Check toe room and pressure at the forefoot.
- Adjust the laces and check for local pressure at the instep.
- Walk a few steps to check heel stability.
Do not assume a painful shoe will stretch into the right fit. A foot-length chart does not replace width and instep checks.
Loafers and elevator shoes
Loafers have no laces to adjust, so check instep coverage and heel slip. Elevator shoes also require checks for internal space and walking stability.
